Rotator Cuff Injury

The rotator cuff muscles are a group of 4 small muscles that surround your shoulder. They have their primary role to stabilise your shoulder as you move it. These muscles are vital for proper function of the shoulder but when they go wrong they can cause a lot of difficultly. One issue that can develop is a rotator cuff injury.

Common Symptoms

A rotator cuff injury may include a simple strain or a tear within one of the rotator cuff muscles. Typically this will suddenly come on after a specific injury mechanism or by repetitive overhead shoulder movements. Typically rotator cuff injuries give what is called a painful arc. This is when you get pain while lifting your arm out by your side between 60 and 120 degrees with the pain mostly ceasing after 120 degrees. Pain is often bad a night and makes it difficult to do simple tasks such as combing your hair.

What Causes a Rotator Cuff Injury?

There are many things that can cause a rotator cuff injury. Often it comes down to a dysfunction in the mechanics of the shoulder that puts undue pressure on the tendons or muscles of the rotator cuff. This will typically happen over a long period of time. You may be more susceptible if you are older due to your muscle mass becoming lower and tendons weakening or if you do a lot of overhead activities. Therefore to treat this type of problem, we need to treat the cause. This may be done by  reducing or changing the way you do certain activities or by improving the mechanics of the shoulder to take the pressure off the rotator cuff and allowing it to he

How Can Chiropractic Help With A Rotator Cuff Injury?

So how can Chiropractic help with a rotator cuff injury? Chiropractors are trained to assess the mechanics of the spine and shoulder to find out what is causing the problem. Once the problem has been identified, the treatment is focused on fixing this cause. Once the pressure is off the injured area and the shoulder is working more functionally, the rotator cuff will be allowed to heal again.
