Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow (otherwise known as lateral epicondylitis) is when you get pain on the outside of your elbow. This often occurs after repetitive use of the forearm muscles over a period of time. The pain is normally felt most when gripping objects, lifting the wrist up (extending the wrist) and twisting the forearm such as  using a screw driver.

What Causes Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is caused by an increased load to the tendons that attach to the outside of your elbow. When this load is maintained or provoked over a period of time it eventually starts to cause injury and inflammation causing pain. The tendons that attach here attach to muscles that extend your wrist. This is why pain can be felt most when doing activities that extend the wrist.

In this video I go through my best 2 exercises you can do at home for tennis elbow. If these exercises don’t resolve you issue, there may be something else underlining the issue. Please do get in touch and we’ll be happy to help!

How Can Chiropractic Help With Tennis Elbow?

The question is what causes the increase strain to the tendon in the first place and why is it on one side and not the other. The obvious answer to this is if you do anything that is repetitive on that same side for a long period of time. This can certainly cause this type of problem. If this is the case, you should find your symptoms go away without any treatment simply by removing the offending activity.

If the pain doesn’t go away, even after avoiding the offending activity, there’s a good chance there’s an underlining issue. This issue may not necessarily just be in the elbow but in the surrounding structures such as your neck, shoulder and wrist. These areas need to be assessed to see what is causing the increased load to these tendons to then provide the best treatment to get to the cause of the problem.
